warehouse perimiter concept- this was the first concept that i made for TOTL. the original idea was to establish the shape of the city. Vi's notes for me was an urban concept , brutalist inspired city with an unwelcoming aura, focusing soley on what we wanted to see with the light and overall vibes. Vi agreed that this is what we wanted to see moving forwards so i kept this aesthetic in mind and continued forwards.
intro enviroment mood concept - this area wouldbe located by the vendor streets and introduce the audience to the overall awsthetic of the city. With this concept i designed a smell piece of storytelling, that the city was once a center for producing robots, so the companies that sold said robots (including the crawlers from the film) would house the workers and their families in block style apartments right next to the factories. As time went on , the companies outsourced the production to a cheaper output, abandoning these factories and warehouses, depleting the workers employment. the more central part of the city would become more populated, and these more poorer ouskirts became a passing view for the metro that rode above them.
i also wanted to establish mood through color, inspired heavily by Molchat Doma's Etazhi album art, giving the enviroment an unfriendly yellow and the shadows of the overhead metro rail to darken the spaces.
Mil's workshop- space layout
this first conccept for Mil's warehouse was mostly to establish and figure out how the layout work work. based off concept sketches that Vi made, the idea originally was for Mil to take over an abandoned warehouse and use it as a dwelling. from this i blocked out a concept about how the warehouse would look like and the spots of interest that Mil would inhabit regularly. Im not too set on this design, it needs more clutter to be more lived in and i dont feel the color of the warehouse fits the mood i want to employ in the setting.
Alleyway concept- mood
With this concept, i wanted to have the setting completely underneath the metro rail, the wires hanging from it and the dim neon glow of the surrounding buildings. this tnenebristic approach to the enviroment would give an even more dingy, unflattering feeling to it. with the crawlers, Vi and I discussed the sirens being a bright red , and with this alleyway illuminated by the crawlers ( adding extra lights as well so the audience can see whats going on ). This design really resonated with me, i like that the old cobbled roads show that parts of this city have been abandoned and underfunded. I think going forwards with the more dystopian brutalist concept should be what we focus on in the enviroment
Graphic posters
while we were in the early stages of concept development, i decided to work on making posters and graphic designs to put around the city, to give it a sense of life and worldbuilding. without the posters or these little cityscape paraphanelia i dont feel the city would feel lived in or alive. theres not really any story or idea to these posters, so you can just lpook at them , and maybe youll see them in the film, who knows :0
